Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Day 1 Activity 3

Activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby [10 points]
Antarctica is the world’s coldest continent. Even though it is made up of ice, it is also the driest continent in the world. In fact, it hasn’t rained there for nearly 2 million years! It is home to many animals such as whales, seals, birds, and fish. There are no permanent human residents (people who live there all the time) in Antarctica, however scientists do visit and stay in Antarctica for a while to study it.

This year the airline, Air New Zealand, filmed their safety video in Antarctica. They used some fabulous actors from Hornby Primary School in Christchurch. Just like on aeroplanes, we also need to keep safe and be smart online. We need to think about the type of information we are sharing online, who we are sharing information with, and how to have a positive digital footprint.

  1. Kia ora Laki,

My name is Hazel and I am part of the Summer Learning Journey team. I'm so excited that you have decided to join us as we learn more about the world around us.

You have included some very important advice to help people stay cybersmart when they are using the internet. I liked your point about respecting the age limits of different websites e.g. Facebook, Instagram. Why do you think some websites have age restrictions like that?

Keep up the great work, and I look forward to reading more of your posts over the next few weeks.

    Cheers,

    Hazel :)

    1. Hey Hazel,
Thank you for commenting on my Blog. One reason why I think they have age restrictions are because people might be 9 or 10 years old and they might go on Facebook or Instagram and see people swearing and they might use those kind of words.

      Thank You!

  2. Hey Laki,

I think that you're probably right about the reasons for age-restrictions on certain sites. It's important that young people are not exposed to swearing or other inappropriate language etc. when they are online.

    Keep up the awesome blogging!

    Hazel :)

  3. Hi Laki,
Well done on finishing this activity. Your tips on how to stay safe online are great. Which one do you think is the most important to follow? I think it is the no sharing personal information rule because they can find out things like your banks account details (if you are old enough to have one) or where you live. Keep up the good work.
