Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Day 5 Activity 1

DAY 5: Blink and You’ll Miss It

On your blog tell us whether you think logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Be sure to provide at least two reasons to support your argument.

I think logging in New Zealand shouldn't be allowed because
- Trees give us Oxygen so they shouldn't cut it down
- They force animals (e.g Owl or Birds with their nest) who live in trees to find new homes

  1. Hi Laki,

It's Susie here again from the Summer Learning Journey team.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions on whether logging should be allowed in New Zealand or not. I agree with you. Trees play an important role in our environment and we should not be cutting down excessive amount of trees.

I can't imagine how scared the birds would be if their homes were to be taken down without any warning. We can't deny the fact that wood provides us useful resources such as building material and paper but this should not be the priority. Do you have any ideas in mind for putting a stop to this? I think there should be a specific procedure in place to make sure there is no wildlife in the area that they want to be cutting down trees. Also, if we were to invest as much time and effort into planting more trees, maybe we can slow down the process of deforestation.

I came across this article yesterday and it talks about the one billion trees programme proposed by the government. It is so sad that they are struggling to find workers to take on this job!! :(

You should have a read through it. I'll include the link below:

  2. Hi Laki,
Well done on finishing this activity. I feel like there are lots of pros and cons to cutting down trees here in New Zealand. Some pros would be that we get more materials to build houses for our growing populations but like you said, the cons are animals like birds have to find a new home. Keep up the excellent work.
